2027 Coins: Sports Quarters, a New Kennedy Half and Everything Else New

The 2027 coins include five Youth Sports Quarters with a new George Washington obverse, a Paralympic half dollar with a new Kennedy portrait, a Native American $1 honoring Dr. Susan La Flesche Picotte, three Working Dogs commemoratives, and a dime that goes back to its old design.
Updated 31 October 2026: now with the final designs the U.S. Mint published on October 26.
As of late October 2026, none of these coins is on sale and no release dates have been announced. What exists so far is the law, the final quarter and half dollar designs, a set of unveiled commemorative designs, and a Proof Set subscription page. Here is what each one is and where it stands.

The Youth Sports Quarters
The headline 2027 coins are the quarters. Public Law 116-330, the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020, sets up a sports quarter program that begins January 1, 2027, and runs until the end of 2030, with up to five sports a year. The Mint says the series will cover 20 sports in all, and on October 26, 2026 it named all of them under the program's official name, the Youth Sports Coin Collection (see our full list of sports). The five for 2027 are baseball, golf, soccer, softball and snowboarding. You can read how they were picked on our how the sports were chosen page.
Both review panels looked at the reverse designs in February 2026. The CCAC met on February 24 and the CFA on February 19, and they agreed on baseball and snowboarding, split on golf and soccer, and picked two versions of one softball design. The Mint's October 26 announcement settled it: baseball is BASE-01 and snowboarding SNOW-03, the designs both panels picked; golf is GOLF-07 and softball SOFT-04A, the CCAC's picks; soccer is SOCC-01, the CFA's pick. The full design comparison lives on our 2027 quarters page, so we will not repeat it here.
The quarters also get a new front. After the 2026 Semiquincentennial quarters, each with its own obverse, Washington returns in a fresh portrait that will be used on all four years of the program. The CCAC preferred design GW-01 at its November 18, 2025 meeting; the CFA preferred GW-03A, which shows Washington in uniform as leader of the Continental Army. The Mint chose GW-01: Washington "in civilian attire at a three-quarter angle." Our obverse page compares the two.
The Paralympic half dollar and a new Kennedy
The same law redesigns the half dollar for 2027 to 2030. Each year's reverse must show "one Paralympic sport," chosen by the Treasury Secretary after consultation with U.S. Paralympics. The 2027 sport is wheelchair basketball.
The obverse is new too. John F. Kennedy stays on the coin, but with a new portrait. The CCAC recommended JFK-02 and the CFA recommended its alternative #4. The final portrait is JFK-04, the CFA's pick, which the Mint describes as Kennedy "gazing skyward with a warm and hopeful expression." It replaces the Gilroy Roberts portrait used since 1964. On the reverse the panels split: the CCAC picked 50c-WCBB-01 at its February 24, 2026 meeting, and the CFA chose #7; the Mint used the CCAC's design, which shows an adult Paralympic athlete. Details and the design history are on our 2027 Kennedy half dollar page.
The Mint has not said how many 2027 half dollars it will strike or whether they will be released into circulation, so plan on looking for this coin in Mint sets.
The 2027 Native American $1 coin
The Native American $1 reverse changes every year. For 2027 it honors Dr. Susan La Flesche Picotte of the Omaha Tribe, whom the CCAC describes as "the first Native American woman to earn a medical degree." Both panels reviewed the candidates along with the 2028 designs.
In its November 24, 2025 letter, the CCAC recommended design 27NA-1, which scored 21 of a possible 30 points, and asked the Mint to revise her portrait "to more accurately reflect her Native American appearance." The CFA's January 30, 2026 letter recommended alternative #1, which shows Picotte tending an elderly woman wrapped in a patterned blanket, and noted that its choice matched the CCAC's. The 2028 reverse will feature Native Hawaiian surfing.
The dime, nickel and cent after the Semiquincentennial
2026 was a one-year redesign year for the nation's 250th anniversary. The law that allowed it is explicit about what follows: "Beginning in 2027, any coin redesigned under this subsection shall revert to the immediately previous designs," except the quarter and half dollar, which move to the sports program.
Dime
The 2026 dime carried an entirely new Emerging Liberty obverse and an eagle reverse. The Mint's Semiquincentennial resources page states that in 2027 the dime "will revert to the immediately previous design." That means the Roosevelt dime returns.
Nickel
The 2026 nickel kept its familiar Jefferson and Monticello designs and added the "1776 ~ 2026" dual date for one year. The Mint's FAQ does not mention the nickel for 2027. With the dual date gone, expect a normal 2027 Jefferson nickel, and the Mint lists one Jefferson nickel in the 2027 Proof Set.
Cent
Check this one carefully before believing what you read online. The final circulating pennies were struck at the Philadelphia Mint on November 12, 2025, and the Mint's own page now calls the penny "no longer a circulating coin as of 2025." It still makes the cent as a collectible sold in annual sets. The 2026 collector penny carried the dual date on the Lincoln obverse. For 2027, the only confirmed cent is the "One Lincoln penny" listed in the 2027 Proof Set. Do not expect to find 2027 cents in your change.
The 2027 Working Dogs commemorative coins
Commemorative coins are sold by the Mint at a premium and never circulate. The Working Dog Commemorative Coin Act (Public Law 118-109, approved November 25, 2024) allows three coins, issued only during the one-year period beginning January 1, 2027. The law does not assign themes; the themes below are from the designs the CFA reviewed in February 2026:
- $5 gold: up to 50,000 coins, 8.359 grams, 90% gold. Surcharge $35, theme therapy dogs.
- $1 silver: up to 500,000 coins, 26.73 grams, at least 90% silver. Surcharge $10, theme guide and service dogs.
- Clad half dollar: up to 750,000 coins. Surcharge $5, theme military and police K-9s.
Surcharges go to America's VetDogs. The CCAC reviewed the designs at its February 24, 2026 meeting and unanimously recommended its top scorers: WD-G-O-02 and WD-G-R-04A for the gold coin (with a heart element removed), WD-S-O-01 and WD-S-R-01 for the silver dollar, and WD-C-O-02A and WD-C-R-03 for the half dollar. The Mint unveiled the designs at a White House ceremony in September 2026 and has posted line art for all six sides in its image library. Prices and an on-sale date had not been published as of late October 2026.
